The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently provided testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee concerning the status of the Iraq war. The GAO reports that there essentially is no significant "progress" at all.
So now what to do? Easy! Blame the Iraqis....
Many of us knew on day one of the invasion that it wasn't going to go well. My roommate and I sat in front of the TV and watched in amazement and sadness as the first American ordinance fell on Baghdad. We looked at each other-and as though in stereophonic sound-said to each other "that's not right".
I knew it would be a disaster because I lived in the Middle East and knew their culture, my roomie knew because of his experience at being cannon fodder in an equally foolish military endeavor called Vietnam.
Surely anyone with any semblance of intellect knew when President Moron stood on the deck of a ship under a banner that stated "we won" before the battle had even begun that there was something very, very wrong.
And now we know. 3740 American military lives and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives later, that there was a reason Saddam was so brutal. That the Religious Fundamentalist wackos that have caused so much death and suffering in Iraq were the exact same threat Saddam was suppressing with his iron hand. Clearly, Iraq was better off under Baathist control. Saddam understood this ancient tribal warfare and the depths to which it ran. BushCo did not.
The fruit of evil men

The mission failed the day it started and now it's official. So, what to do if you're the US gov't? Easy! Blame the Iraqis.
"Benchmarks"? Bullshit. You can't meet benchmarks in the middle of a tribal civil war where the primary antagonists understand only death.
The puppet government we set up, nurtured, supported and advocated has now become the scape goat for neocon failure in Iraq. Sound familiar? It should. It wasn't that long ago that we set the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden up in Afghanistan to fight the Soviets, then did the same thing to them. Panama? Somalia? Iraq (twice)...The list goes on and on.
"Benchmarks"? Sorry. That just ain't gonna fly.
The parties responsible for the debacle in Iraq are easily identifiable. They are the liars, greed inspired, and practitioners of deception. They are the Bush Administration, the PNAC and the Israeli gov't.
The plan worked for the most part, on the corporate side of the equation the Commercial Crusade has netted billions with a capital B. On the ideological side, the religious zealotry of the Israeli government's Zionist Crusade and it's Christian Fundamentalist supporters hoped to cause the instability of the region with the intention of pitting Arab against Arab. That too has been successful. Though due to the strategic failures, Israel and it's supporters will most likely come to regret this foolish plan as the anger toward Israel is fueled by aggression toward it's neighbors and has now spilled over to the non-Muslim world.
Let's face it, if Iraq became Amsterdam tomorrow there would still be no possible way to excuse the loss of life involved, the damage to American credibility, and the loss of constitutional rights here at home.
The war was lost before it started. It was lost because it was immoral in it's very nature. The war was lost because it was drafted by evil, foolhardy men. The war was lost because it was born of greed and a fear of the unknown.
Not because a conglomeration of third-world tribal leaders couldn't meet a "benchmark".
The war in Iraq is lost because it was WRONG and no amount of success, either contrived, perceived or genuine will ever change that ever-prevailing fact.
